Segun Arinze, a 58-year-old veteran Nollywood actor, recently revealed that his real name is Segun Aina and shared the story behind his stage name, Arinze.
In 1991, while pursuing a music career alongside acting, he received an offer from a representative of Sony Music who was interested in signing him. Recalling the moment, Arinze said, “I was also singing. In 1991, I was told someone wanted to sign me. ‘We are going to sign you on.’ He came from Sony Music. So he called me and I signed the contract. He signed. And then he said, ‘Okay, we are going to start recording.’”
Arinze also reflected on his educational background and the challenges he faced. He studied Dramatic Arts at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). His father was initially opposed to this path, preferring that he pursue a career in law. “My dad did not like the idea because he wanted me to be a lawyer. At a point in time, I thought he was not going to pay my school fees to go and read drama,” he shared.
The turning point came at the National Theatre during an open theatre event. “The National Theatre was running an open theatre then… ‘Welcome new artiste Segun Arinze’. I said, ‘Excuse me sir, what is this? Why are you changing my name?’” Despite his initial resistance, the name Segun Arinze stuck. When his album ‘Dreams’ was released, the name Segun Arinze was widely publicized, effectively replacing his birth name.
Segun Arinze’s journey in Nollywood has been marked by numerous successful roles and contributions to the industry. His stage name has become iconic, representing his artistic legacy and enduring influence in Nigerian entertainment.
