In spite of their spirited performance in recent international friendlies, where they managed a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia and clinched a narrow 3-2 victory over Mozambique, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have maintained their 40th position in the latest FIFA World ranking released on Thursday.
Despite holding the 39th spot in June and July, Jose Peseiro’s team slipped to 40th in September and October. Within Africa, they continue to hold the sixth position, trailing behind the top five teams: Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt.
In their World Cup qualifying group, Lesotho, the opponents of the Super Eagles in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, faced a minor drop in the rankings from 151 to 153. Similarly, South Africa dropped from 63 to 64, while Zimbabwe maintained their 125th position.
The global rankings continue to be dominated by FIFA 2022 World Cup champions Argentina, leading the pack, with France closely following in second place and Brazil securing the third spot. England stands strong in fourth, while Belgium completes the top five positions.
Despite their recent draws and victories, the Super Eagles’ ranking remains stable. Their next challenge awaits in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against Lesotho, set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo this November.
